This inaugural national event will bring together key policy makers, businesses, philanthropists, and think tanks concerned with improving the livelihoods of those in underserved communities. Attending the Summit will be in-the-field practitioners who represent over 45 economic development agencies that serve refugee, immigrant, and other low-income populations. Also in attendance will be the businesses that work with and hire their clients. The three overarching goals of the Summit are to: 1. Convene the diverse range of non-profit organizations and businesses that provide economic development services to refugee and immigrant communities; 2. Connect these agencies with policy makers and their initiatives, foundations, and think tanks so they have a broader context and awareness of each other; and 3. Communicate on a national level, the trends in the field to include the innovations and challenges that these agencies face, and how foundations, federal agencies, and businesses are responding. We are hosting this Summit as a finale to three pre-summit workshops that deal with specific economic development sectors vital to our non-profit and business constituents: Microenterprise Business Lending, Asset Development, and Agriculture initiatives. The audience of this Summit, those who work with and serve refugee and immigrant communities, provide robust business development services such as business loans, planning, and technical assistance. They offer matched savings accounts so that low income populations can save toward the purchase of an asset. They also work in food systems to ensure that healthy and adequate foods are available to their constituents in culturally sensitive and economically viable ways. We encourage you to attend this inaugural event to help those working in underserved communities reach out to each other and share best practices from around the country. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Agenda 8:00 - 8:30 am Registration - Hilton Washington Embassy Row, Washington, DC 8:30 - 9:00 am Welcome and Summit Overview Roger Campos, President and & CEO, MBRT 9:00 - 10:30 am Panel Discussion: Integration and the Department of Homeland Security Task Force on New Americans Facilitator: Peggy Gilbert - (ISED) Panelists: The Task Force Members: SBA, USDA, HHS, Labor, Homeland Security, State, Treasury, HUD, Education, Commerce 10:30 - 10:40 am Break 10:40 - 12:00 pm Panel Discussion: States, Corporations, and Economic Development Trends for Underserved Communities Facilitator: Peggy Gilbert - ISED Panelists (invited): President of Refugee State Coordinators, State Workforce Development Representatives, Marriott, PepsiCo, etc. 12:00 - 2:00 pm Luncheon - "Partners for New Americans" Keynote Speakers Speaker: Magic Johnson, CEO & Sport Legend (invited) Speaker: Sheila Johnson, Co-Founder, BET Speaker: Anna Cabral, U.S. Treasurer Speaker: Sen.
